Day 5 Without Cable TV

Standard

Traveling is definitely the best way to break the habit. Haven’t even turned the TV in our room at night. Too busy and tired to think about it.

Not missing cable TV at all today.

Day 2 Without Cable

Standard

Woke up with plans to pack for my trip to Alaska, but paused to think what I might have on the TV while I prepared.

With my homemade antenna, I was able to pick up the local Channel 11 Saturday morning news. It was sufficient, but, again, it was mostly house fires, car accidents and deaths in Durham, Fayetteville and Raleigh.

I settled on national network news, but by that time I was more focused on packing and making sure the office had all the information they needed to cover for me during my vacation.

Yesterday, while at work, I was able to test my TabloTV’s ability to play my recordings over the Internet. Previously, I had set up the required port forwarding (3 ports), so I was glad to see it work. I was able to watch a recorded Durham Bulls baseball game (only out the corner of my eye) while I worked. Happy, happy!

On this, Day 2, I didn’t really miss cable at all. Now I’m on a plane.

Day 1 Without Cable TV

Standard

Morning routine was a little out of whack. Couldn’t watch TheFive on the DVR while eating breakfast. Kind of missing Greg Gutfeld, Dana Perino and Andrea Tanteros. [Note to self, follow their Twitter feed.]

Instead, chose to watch local morning news and weather. The anchors have changes in the last six years. Flipped from channel 5 to 11 to 17. Seems like petty news to me – store burned, car flipped, dog saves cat’s life…. Not sure I’ll find my “fix” with local news.

This evening, I found solace in Netflix. I’m one if the few who never started watching the US version if The Office (Ricky Gervais started it in the UK). So I got 3 episodes in tonight. Funny, yet painful – too close to what I’ve seen before, in many respects.

Didn’t start missing ESPN yet, though — and I was expecting to. But there will come a time when I want cable sports and I’ll have to divert interest.

Saved about $5 today alone. Cha-Ching.
